Periodontal (Gum) Disease

Gum disease (gingivitis and periodontal disease) causes problems with both your oral health and overall health.  Scientific research has shown  links between gum disease and stroke, heart disease, diabetes - even an increased risk for pregnant women.

Gingivitis (inflammation of the gum tissue) is reversible in many cases when the plaque and tartar have been removed and proper home care is maintained.

Periodontal disease occurs when there is significant bone loss around the teeth - evident on the x-ray and with periodontal probing.  In this case a deep cleaning (also referred to as a Scaling and Root Planning) is required to thoroughly clean below the gumline, creating a clean surface on the tooth for the gum tissue to heal.  Depending on the severity, it may take several appointments to complete, then proper home care and more frequent recall appointments to maintain the patient's oral health.
